OUR TEAM

Lorica is made up of an experienced team of investment professionals led by Gary Morris and Thomas Gomes, who have over 40 years of combined investment experience and have collaborated for over 15 years.

Gary Morris BASc, MBA, CFA

Head of Fixed Income, Lead Portfolio Manager

 

Gary has over 32 years of experience in fixed income investment management. He has been an owner and partner of several successful investment counselors and now is the head of fixed income at Cidel Asset Management Inc. He began his investment career on the “sell-side” at the renowned Canadian fixed income shop – McLeod Young Weir (now Scotia Capital), after which he jumped to the “buy-side” and commenced a lengthy career as a lead portfolio manager. Gary joined Cidel in 2021 following the acquisition of Lorica Investment Counsel Inc, an independent boutique fixed income manager that Gary founded and headed in 2009. Prior to founding Lorica, Gary was a partner at Laketon Investment Management Inc. (having joined its predecessor, Canada Life Investment Management Inc., now a part of Mackenzie Financial Corporation).

At Cidel, Gary is responsible for the overall management of the fixed income team and the fixed income assets, as well as playing a key role on the Asset Mix Committee. Gary and the Cidel fixed income team take a proven approach to stewarding client fixed income assets. In addition to Cidel portfolios, Gary and his team oversee Lorica Investment Strategies which are available to select business partners.

Gary has been a regular speaker at industry investment conferences focusing on the economy and the bond market. He also writes a regular commentary in which he explores a variety of macro-economic and capital and bond market themes.

Gary holds a degree from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Toronto, has an MBA from the Schulich School of Business, and holds a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®) designation.

Outside of work, Gary is an avid cyclist having had the opportunity to combine his passion for cycling with charitable causes. He currently serves on Campfire Circle’s (a camp for kids and families affected by childhood cancer) Ride to New York City board.

Thomas Gomes  CFA, CPA

Lead Portfolio Manager

 

Thomas joined Cidel in 2021 following the acquisition of Lorica Investment Counsel where he was senior portfolio manager and partner. He is responsible for the analysis and management of credit investments including provincial and corporate bonds, and asset and mortgage-backed securities.

Thomas has over 21 years of experience in the fixed income community. Thomas was Lorica’s first employee and helped build it over more than ten years. Earlier in his career Thomas worked at a large asset manager in Toronto.

Thomas holds a degree from the University of Toronto with a BComm (double major in finance and accounting). He has his Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®) certification and is a US Certified Public Accountant (CPA®).

Sean Emmons CFA

Senior Fixed Income Analyst

 

Sean joined Cidel in October 2022. He is a key member of the fixed income team and involved in many aspects of Cidel’s fixed income investment process. His primary responsibility is for the analysis of credit investments including corporate and provincial bonds, as well as hybrid securities

Sean has over 7 years of experience in fixed income. Prior to joining Cidel, Sean worked for a large Canadian investment manager in the investment grade credit research department. He was responsible for coverage of several sectors including technology, media, telecom, infrastructure, and public-private partnership (P3) projects. Sean also has experience assessing Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) factors for corporate issuers.

Sean holds a bachelor’s degree from Acadia University and an MBA from McMaster University with a focus on finance and economics. He has a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®) certification.

Outside of work, Sean enjoys spending time outdoors with his family, as well as golf, hockey, and cycling.

Sushil Singh MBA

Fixed Income Analyst

 

Sushil joined Cidel in 2022 following his MBA. He is responsible for support and development of proprietary fixed income software and portfolio analytics, including applications for tracking portfolio characteristics, performance, and performance attribution. His other responsibilities include money market investments and economic and market data analysis.

Sushil holds an Engineering degree from the Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi, has an MBA (specialization in finance) from the Schulich School of Business, and is a participant in the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®) program.

Sushil has over 4 years of experience in the field of management consulting. Outside of work, Sushil enjoys spending time outdoors as well as cricket, hiking and lawn tennis.

Tom Tien

Head of Advisor Distribution

 

Tom recently joined Cidel Asset Management to focus on the third party advisor channel. He will be responsible for building out the Retail division by providing qualified solutions to high net worth advisors and portfolio managers.

Prior to joining Cidel, Tom was previously at a boutique firm servicing advisors across Ontario with Longterm solutions. He also has worked at the largest asset managers in the world so he comes to Cidel with a tremendous amount of expertise.

Tom holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from McMaster University.

Joanne Nahibuan  

Institutional, Client Services

 

Joanne joined the firm at its inception and is responsible for institutional and advisory channel clients. Joanne has over 30 years of experience working in the financial services industry. Throughout her career she has shown an affinity for new technologies, using them to improve the overall client experience. Prior to joining Lorica, Joanne was Assistant Vice President Marketing & Business Development at Laketon Investment Management (now a division of GLC Asset Management Group Ltd.) where she became the central contact for all clients, managing the production of all outgoing marketing material, and responsible for all outside reporting. Joanne began her career in investment management with The Guardian Group of Funds in client service and marketing and then left to join a predecessor of Laketon where she was a marketing coordinator for separately managed accounts and institutional clients.

Joanne has taken many marketing related courses at both Ryerson University and George Brown College. When Joanne is not at work, she spends her time trying new boot camp classes.

Gary Morris
BASc, MBA, CFA

PRESIDENT

 

Gary is the president and founder of Lorica which was launched in the fall of 2010. He is responsible for the overall management and direction of the firm and together with Thomas Gomes manages fixed income investments for Lorica’s clients.

Gary has been part of Canada’s fixed income community for over 30 years and has a 25-year track record as a lead bond manager. He began his investment career with McLeod Young Weir (now Scotia Capital Markets), after which he joined Canada Life Investment Management Inc. (the predecessor to Laketon Investment Management Ltd., now GLC Asset Management Group).

Gary graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science (EngSci.) from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Toronto in 1986 and an MBA from the Schulich School of Business in 1989. He earned the CFA designation in 1992. He is an avid cyclist and has combined his love of cycling with a variety of charitable causes.

Thomas Gomes
BComm, CFA, CPA

PORTFOLIO MANAGER

 

Thomas joined Lorica as its inception in 2010; he subsequently became a shareholder and a director. Together with Gary Morris, he is responsible for the management of fixed income assets for Lorica’s clients. He specializes in the analysis and management of credit investments including provincial and corporate bonds and asset and mortgage backed securities.

Prior to joining Lorica, Thomas was employed at Laketon Investment Management, having collaborated with Gary Morris since joining Laketon in 2000. Thomas began his investment career with Canada Trust in securities lending and relationship management.

Thomas graduated from the University of Toronto in 2000 with a BComm (double major in finance and accounting). He received his CFA designation in 2003 and US CPA designation in 2007. Outside of the office, Thomas enjoys running, astronomy and travel.

Joanne Nahibuan  

MANAGER, MARKETING & CLIENT SERVICES

 

Joanne is Lorica’s Manager, Marketing & Client Services, having joined the firm at its inception. She is involved in many areas of Lorica’s business including marketing and operations.

Joanne has over 29 years of experience working in the financial services industry. Throughout her career she has shown an affinity for new technologies, using them to improve the overall client experience.
